Nature areas

The omnipresence of nature is one of the most striking features of Cantabria. The region has the good fortune of having many landscapes conserved almost in tact. These include protected nature areas such as:

NATURAL PARK OF THE PICOS DE EUROPA

The Picos de Europa nature park is one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in the Iberian peninsula. This stunning stone massif with altitudes of over 2.500 metres is visible from almost any point of Cantabria, and can easily be visited from the Liebana district, including by the Fuente Dé Cable Car.

NATURE RESERVE OF THE MARSHES OF SANTOŅA

The marshes of Santoņa and Noja, Joyel and Victoria are beautiful sight and one of the most spectacular marine landscapes along the entire Cantabrian coast. It is important refuge for migratory birds from dozens of different species that flock here each winter in groups of up to 20.000, delighting ornithologists and nature enthusiasts alike with a unique sight.

OYAMBRE NATURE PARK

Beaches, dunes, cliffs, coastal meadows, estuaries...this area on the Atlantic coast is a compendium of all possible forms of the Cantabrian Coast.

SAJA BESAYA NATURE PARK

An area dominated by forest and delimited by the courses of rivers Besaya and Saja, encompassing the Ucieda and Sierra de Barcena Mayor mountains with their beech groves and oak woods that provide shelter to endangered species such as the grizzly bear, otter and the golden eagle. This is one of the largest nature parks in Spain.

DUNAS DE LIENCRES NATURE PARK

At the mouth of the river Pas and just 12 kilometres from Santander lies the largest and most important dune system of the entire northern coast of the peninsula. This picturesque area has a rich ecosystem with scarce vegetation that has had to adapt to the salty sea air.
