The commercial tradition in Santander arose at the beginning of the present century. This commercial spirit continues prevailing today and because of the quality and variety of it shopping, Santander is considered as a centre of the highest importance in this field of activity.

The extension of the city towards the east has not changed the fact that the finest shopping area is still situated in the centre of the city. From east to west, from the Town Council to the Plaza Porticada, and from north to south, from Rualasal to Calderón de la Barca, the main streets are entirely commercial. These harbour all kinds of facilities capable of satisfying whatever demand. This group of streets with its numerous establishments forms the main commercial centre of Cantabria, where whatever product, no matter what is might be, can be acquired.

The centre of Santander harbours small and large shops in an immense variety of establishments. Fashion, gifts, jewellery, textiles, shoes etc. are displayed in an area of more than half a million square metres, creating the biggest and best commercial provision in Cantabria. But the centre of Santander is not only commercial. It also has cinemas, cafeterias, restaurants and exhibition rooms... all of which makes a journey through the area an agreeable walk which offers all possible options for leisure, shopping or relaxing.

Right in the centre of the city there are four underground car parks(Plaza Pombo, Alfonso XIII, Town Council and Alameda Primera) for those who wish to use their car. In all of the town centre, parking is regulated and controlled. You can also reach the reach the centre of Santander by using the excellent public transport system.

The centre of Santander is without doubt the big commercial area which is fitting for a modern and cosmopolitan city such as Santander.

It is a place which fulfils all the requirements of shopping, leisure and relaxing; with a variety on offer of the highest quality.
