Communications
A diverse system
of communications connects Santander with the rest of Spain and Europe.
Parayas Airport, ten minutes from the city centre, has daily flights
to and from Madrid and Barcelona. It is equipped to allow for daily
landings of national and international charter flights. And, 50 minutes
away from Santander on the motorway of Cantabria, is Sondica International
Airport which connects Santander to all of Europe. The Port of Santander,
which has a long commercial and tourist tradition, offers several completely
refurbished and modernised facilities and services. The ferry linking
Santander with the port of Plymouth (in Great Britain) arrives at the
Maritime Station twice a week and at other times so do transatlantic
cruise liners such as the Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Viking. Likewise,
Santander can count on one of the best marinas in Spain: the Marina
of Cantabria. It is situated ten minutes away from the city and has
800 moorings and a full range of services. The Sailing Club is right
in the centre of Santander, in the Bay of Santander, and it also provides
moorings for pleasure craft.
The RENFE provides
daily train links to Madrid, Alicante, Avila, Palencia and Valladolid
and the FEVE to Oviedo and Bilbao. From the Bus Station it is possible
to travel daily to Madrid, the Basque Country, Galicia, Asturias, Castilla
Leon, La Rioja, Zaragoza, Barcelona, Pamplona, Switzerland, Paris, Brussels
and London.
The A634 connects Cantabria to the east with Asturias and Galicia and to
the west with the Basque Country, Aragon, Cataluyna and routes to Europe;
the A611 (to Palencia and Valladolid) and the A623 (to Burgos)link the region
with the Castellana plateau and Madrid. A comprehensive regional road network
allows fast and convenient access to the coastal towns. It reaches from
Castro Urdiales, Laredo, Santoña and Noja in the east to Comillas
and San Vincente de la Barquera in the west. The motorway between Santander
and Torrelavega is the communication route to the interior of Cantabria.
